Concrete Foundations in Wakefield Rich Mix Concrete Ltd delivers quality assured ready mixed concrete suitable for a variety of foundations. The foundation mix required is dependent upon individual project requirements.
There are natural factors which can affect the strength of foundation mix required including the soil type on site and the presence of large vegetation close to the footing. Also civil engineers may specify a particular strength mix due to the presence of drainage or sewerage pipes across the foundation or if there is a requirement to build the foundation on a reinforced raft due to unstable ground conditions or if an existing property is built on a raft.
We are happy to discuss your individual requirements with you and are able to provide ready mixed concrete suitable for a variety of foundations including:
House extension foundations New build foundations Reinforced raft foundations Conservatory foundations Garage foundations Boundary wall foundations Retaining wall foundations Concrete Strip Foundations Generally, for strip foundations suitable for a home extension building control would specify a minimum width of 600mm with the foundation being located centrally beneath the wall.
Unless situated on rock, strip foundations should have a minimum depth of 450mm in order to avoid the effects of frost action. This depth may also need to be increased depending upon local climate conditions, soil type, the presence of drainage or nearby trees and the depth of solid ground. Clay soils in particular will require the strip foundation to be deeper-typically a minimum of 750mm on low shrinkage clay soils and at least 1000mm or greater on high shrinkage clay soils.
The presence of coal or other aggressive substances may require the concrete to have a higher cement content and to be sulphate resistant.
Concrete Raft Foundations We are able to supply concrete mixes suitable for reinforced concrete rafts or slabs for house foundations. Rafts spread the load of the building over a larger area and so lower the pressure applied to the ground. Rafts tend to be used instead of traditional strip foundations if the ground is poor or unsuitable to support the digging of trenches, or if there are drains or trees present nearby. Also if an existing property is built on a raft foundation, then any extensions to the property would also tend to require a raft foundation, although this would ultimately be decided by building control.
Rafts are constructed from reinforced steel and therefore require a stronger concrete mix with a higher cement content to prevent the concrete from reacting with the steelwork and causing possible structural problems.
Reinforced concrete should be compacting using a vibrating poker to remove any voids and hence weaknesses in the slab. Care should be taken not to over compact the slab as this can lead to the aggregates sand cement separating surface strength to be lowered. Floor slabs can be tampered by hand if the thickness does not exceed 150mm.
